‘First Year Experience in the Faculty of Arts, University of Auckland’

In the first of a series of Learning and Teaching Seminars, we are delighted to welcome Dr Margaret Henley from the University of Auckland, who is going to talk about engagement and retention initiatives in the Faculty of Arts. The development and adoption of the ARTS First Year Experience Programme and the Targeted Learning Sessions in the Faculty of Arts, University of Auckland were influenced by the findings of the longitudinal studies on engagement and retention across Australian Universities (Craig McInnis, Kerri-Lee Krause, Robyn Hartley & Richard James (2005) and the USA studies primarily of Vincent Tinto (2004, 2008) and George Kuh. (2005)   At UoA there were some measures in place to address the needs of Maori and Pasifika students, but it was increasingly obvious that the learning needs of the diverse student body in the faculty were not being met.  The strategies of the First Year Experience programme were designed to offer all students in the faculty peer mentoring and academic support in a way that normalised and promoted help seeking behaviour.  The key focus for retention was to ensure student engagement within the first 4-6 weeks of the semester. A secondary focus was to address issues of assessment and seek a way to combine the energies of academic and professional staff within discipline specific services.  The solution was the Targeted Learning Scheme designed to get first year students tackling  their assignments earlier than was usual and providing a non-threatening way of offering academic assistance in an open forum.
